Mark is the Head Coach of the 25 times Marin Swim League Champions, Sleepy Hollow Swim Team. Mark coached the Drake High School boys water polo team for 18 years. He was inducted into the Marin County Athletic League, Hall of Fame in 2014. Mark is co-founder of SHAQ.
Matt grew up in San Diego and attended Poway High School, and was a part of the first water polo club in San Diego. He then attended UCLA and was a part of two NCAA championship teams in 1995 and 1996, earning NCAA player of the year awards both years. After college he moved to Marin County and has coached water polo in the MCAL league since 2000. Matt and Mark formed SHAQ in 2007.
Sophie Doyle has been swimming since she was four years old and playing water polo since age 9. She grew up in Southern California and attended Mater Dei High School where she played four years of varsity water polo and swimming. Sophie then went on to play water polo and swim at Santa Rosa Junior College. After two years, she transferred to the University of Pacific and went on to play two years of D1 water polo and earn a degree in communication and psychology. After graduating, Sophie moved to Australia to play water polo and coach. Since returning home, Sophie has been coaching for Marin Catholic High School varsity women's water polo and men's and women's swimming since 2013. She has been coaching for SHAQ since 2014 and has a passion for coaching and sharing her love of the game.
Joey was a dual sport athlete as a member of the Santa Rosa Junior College water polo and swim teams, earning 1st Team All American in Water Polo and helping lead each team to a third place finish in the state. Joey then transferred to the University of the Pacific (UOP). At UOP, he was a two-time All MPSF Academic Team Selection, and helped guide the water polo team to a National No. 4 NCAA D-1 ranking.
Coach Doyle comes to SHAQ having previously spent three years as an Assistant Coach for the Sonoma State University Women's Water Polo Team and as a Swim Instructor/Lecturer in the Sonoma State University Kinesiology Department. Additionally, he served two years as the Head Coach for the Santa Rosa Junior College Women's Water Polo Team.
Matt Stang grew up in Marin County and began playing club water polo at the age of eight. He then began his coaching career at age eighteen. He is probably best known for his home baked bread, aka, "Stang Bread. Matt has played and received all-team awards at the high school, junior college, and club college levels. He also received a silver medal during a single season of international club water polo in Denmark.
As a San Diego native, Ryen played water polo for Carlsbad High School, while gaining international experience training in Eastern Europe. He continued his athletic career at UC Santa Barbara under Coach Wolf Wigo, graduating in 2012. Ryen began coaching in 2016 at private high schools in California and joined SHAQ in 2020 to work with all age groups.
Brian grew up in the Lamorinda area and played in high school at Acalanes HS. Brian played collegiately at Cal and was a member of the 1990, 1991, and 1992 NCAA championship teams. He was the boys coach at Acalanes from 1995-2010 and will begin his first year as the girls coach at Redwood this coming fall.
Chad grew up in the East Bay and went to De La Salle High School where he was a varsity member of the water polo, soccer, swimming, and track teams. Chad then played water polo for Stanford University where he participated in 4 NCAA championship games and won titles in 2001 and 2002. He was twice named to the All-MPSF and All-American teams as Stanford's goalie. After college, Chad earned a MBA from UCLA Anderson and settled in Marin by 2015 where he works in real estate and construction.
Brian grew up in southern California and attended Servite High school where he was a member of the varsity swim and water polo teams and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017. He attended Stanford University where he was 3x team captain, 3x First Team All-American and Academic All-American, 4x All MPSF, MPSF Player of The Year, Stanford Male Athlete of The Year (Conference), Peter J. Cutino Award Finalist, and 2x NCAA Division I Runner-Up. Throughout his water polo career, he competed as a member of the United States Youth, Junior, and National teams.
A native mariner, Bobby grew up swimming for the Scott Valley
Sea-Serpents. He played water polo at Tam High School and then
UC Berkeley for college. He then continued to compete for the SF Olympic club in Masters tournaments. Bobby is looking forward to giving back to the sport that has given him so much. He believes in personal values and a team first mentality, healthy competition and fun.
Alex was born in Hong Kong, and spent his early years in Japan. Moving to Southern California in his youth he started playing water polo at various clubs in the Los Angeles Area such as LA Water Polo Club, S&S Bruin, as well as Malibu WPC. He attended the Cate High school in Carpinteria California where he played for four years. Following his time in high school, Alex was recruited to play at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Alex is currently the boy’s varsity head coach at San Rafael High School.
